The 2025 Copa do Brasil got underway last night, featuring two Brasileirao sides.
After a goalless first half, last year’s beaten finalists, Atlético Mineiro, secured their place in the next round, but it wasn’t an easy evening for Cuca’s men.
They were frustrated by Série D side Tocantinópolis up until the 87th minute. It took a penalty from talisman Hulk to break the deadlock, and moments later, new signing Rony from Palmeiras netted from close range to ensure Galo avoided a scare.
Also picking up a win was 2011 winners Vasco da Gama, who like Atletico-MG went into the halftime break goalless in their match against União EC.
Similar to Galo, It would take a penalty for Vasco to break the deadlock as Pablo Vegetti sent goalkeeper Fernando Nunes the wrong way. Goals from Rayan and Hugo Moura late on certified a 3-0 win for the Rio side.
Copa do Brasil action continues this week and next as 76 teams vie for a place in the second round of the competition.
