Game Information
Saturday 12th April – Kick-off – 22:30 (GMT)
The Derby Paulista returns as fierce rivals Corinthians and Palmeiras clash once again, with pride, form, and bragging rights on the line in one of Brazilian football’s most iconic battles.
Palmeiras
It’s been a solid week for Palmeiras, who have now won their last three matches and remain unbeaten in four.
Last time out in the league, they grabbed a 2-1 victory on the road against Sport Recife.
Flaco López gave Palmeiras the lead from the penalty spot, but they were quickly pegged back by Chrystian Barletta, who pulled things level for Sport after a well-worked corner routine.
It looked like the match would end in a draw—until another penalty, this time deep into stoppage time. Left-back Joaquín Piquerez stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to seal all three points for Palmeiras. It marked the second straight match where Palmeiras scored a stoppage-time winner, having done the same in their 3-2 Copa Libertadores win just days earlier.
Palmeiras were back in Libertadores action again on Wednesday, this time earning a 1-0 win over Cerro Porteño in a dominant display. A first-half goal from Richard Ríos—set up by Felipe Anderson—made it two wins from two in the competition for Verdão.
Now, they’ll be out for revenge after their Campeonato Paulista loss to Corinthians back in March.
Corinthians
After a frustrating draw with Bahia on the road, Corinthians bounced back in style with a 3-0 victory over Vasco da Gama at home, delivering a wonderful display of clinical finishing.
In truth, the scoreline could have been even more impressive, following two disallowed goals—but Timão won’t care about that.
Yuri Alberto opened the scoring inside 11 minutes after Memphis Depay chested the ball down perfectly for him to finish.
Moments later, the pair would switch roles, with Yuri Alberto this time providing the assist for Depay to give the hosts a two-goal lead.
The second half saw Corinthians have two more goals disallowed, but they finally got their third in stoppage time, thanks to an own goal from João Victor.
In midweek Copa Sudamericana action, Corinthians earned a decent point on the road against América de Cali—something they’ll be fairly pleased with.
Now, heading into this clash with rivals Palmeiras—whom they recently defeated in the Campeonato Paulista—Timão will be eager to replicate that performance here
