Game Information
Saturday 19th April – Kick-off – 22:30 (GMT)
The latest edition of the Clássico dos Milhões will take place on Saturday with both Flamengo and Vasco da Gama out to secure not only three points, but bragging rights. The Rubro Negro we’re victorious the last time the sites met with a 3-1 aggregate victory in the Campeonato Carioca.
Vasco da Gama
It’s been an up-and-down start to the season for Vasco da Gama, with two wins and two draws from their opening four matches. Both victories came at home, but this next test will take place at the Maracanã rather than their usual base at São Januário.
In midweek, they fell to a 2-1 defeat on the road against Ceará. Vasco will be looking to bounce back quickly from that result. Ceará dominated the early stages and got their reward when Pedro Raul opened the scoring. He struck again nine minutes from time, doubling his tally and seemingly sealing the points. Vasco did rally late on, with Pablo Vegetti grabbing a consolation, but it proved too little too late.
Flamengo
After being held by Internacional on the opening weekend, Flamengo have gone from strength to strength. Their midweek demolition of Juventude marked a third straight win, and in that same stretch, they’ve conceded just once, a sign of growing control on both sides of the pitch.
The first half was all about attacking quality, with Flamengo racing into a 3-0 lead by the break through goals from Erick Pulgar, Gonzalo Plata, and Danilo. The only negative was Ayrton Lucas being forced off with an injury.
There was no let-up after the restart. Giorgian De Arrascaeta added a fourth before Pedro stepped up with a second-half brace to cap off a dominant 6-0 performance.
The Rubro-Negro are arguably the most entertaining side in the league right now, and with Vasco not quite firing at full tilt, Flamengo will head into this match brimming with confidence.
