Game Information
Sunday 20th April – Kick-off – 01:00 (GMT)
One of the biggest matches of the weekend is a thrilling encounter between two great rivals as Internacional take on Grêmio in the first Brasileirão edition of GRENAL in 2025.
The sides already met earlier this year in the Gaucho state championship, with Internacional coming out on top with a 3-1 aggregate win, including a 2-0 victory in their rivals’ backyard.
Grêmio
Grêmio are going through a terrible time at the moment. After winning their opening game, they’ve suffered three straight defeats and now sit in the bottom four. In midweek, they took on newly promoted Mirassol and were handed a thumping 4-1 battering.
The side from Porto Alegre got off to a nightmare start, conceding inside three minutes after a lovely strike from Daniel Borges. Moments later, former Grêmio man Reinaldo slotted home from the penalty spot to give Mirassol a 2-0 lead.
To make matters worse, Reinaldo added a third with a stunning free kick. Martin Braithwaite pulled one back for Grêmio, but Mirassol had the final say, with Borges doubling his tally to send Grêmio home in disgrace.
Gustavo Quintero was sacked following the defeat, meaning James Freitas will take interim charge here.
Internacional
After back-to-back wins in all competitions, Internacional have hit a slight hiccup with a draw and a defeat.
In midweek, they hosted Palmeiras and, despite controlling most of the ball, were made to pay for their missed chances, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat after a second-half strike from Facundo Torres. It marked their first league loss of the season — and one they’ll be desperate to bounce back from, especially with a derby on the horizon.
Inter head into this clash knowing they have the blueprint to beat their bitter rivals, having already gotten the better of Grêmio in the Gaucho State Championship earlier this year.
Despite the recent wobble, performances haven’t been as poor as the results suggest. And with Grêmio crumbling after a string of defeats, Inter will feel this is the perfect opportunity to pile on the misery and claim another vital derby win.
Expected lineups
Grêmio – Tiago Volpi, Igor Serrote, Jemerson, Wagner Leonardo, Lucas Esteves, Camilo, Villasanti, Edenilson, Pavón, Kike Oliveira, Braithwaite
Internacional – Anthoni, Aguirre, Vitão, Rogel, Bernabei, Fernando, Bruno Henrique, Alan Patrick, Wesley, Vitinho, Borré
Prediction
Grêmio 0-2 Internacional
