Flamengo
Flamengo surrendered their lead at the top and have now dropped to third place after suffering a 2-1 loss away to Cruzeiro in their last league outing. Kaio Jorge opened the scoring inside 15 minutes with a brilliant finish past goalkeeper Rossi. Just before half-time, Giorgian de Arrascaeta brought Flamengo level, ensuring the sides went into the break all square.
Then came the storyline everyone anticipated. Former Flamengo man Gabriel Barbosa, now at Cruzeiro, came on as a late second-half substitute. In the 96th minute, Flamengo conceded a penalty. Barbosa stepped up and saw his effort saved, but he calmly tucked in the rebound to give Cruzeiro all three points and seal a dramatic win over his former club.
In midweek, Flamengo travelled to Argentina to face Talleres Córdoba in the Copa Libertadores. They took the lead early once again through de Arrascaeta, but in the second half, Gastón Verón equalised for the hosts. Flamengo will now be looking to bounce back after a disappointing few days for the Rubro-Negro.
Bahia
Bahia are on a fantastic run in the league, having won their last three matches. They currently sit sixth in the standings and come into this one after a strong 1-0 victory over reigning champions Botafogo, with the winning goal coming in the first half from Cauly.
However, things weren’t as positive in midweek for the Brazilian side, who suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Uruguayan outfit Nacional in the Copa Sudamericana. Despite taking the lead in the second half through Jean Lucas, goals from Lucas Morales, Nicolás López, and Julián Millán turned the match on its head and gave the visitors a crucial away win.
Bahia will now be hoping that midweek result was just a blip and that they can carry on their excellent league form, which has seen them beat Ceará, Palmeiras, and Botafogo. They’ll be looking to add Flamengo to that list as manager Rogério Ceni prepares to face his former club.
Prediction – Flamengo 2-0 Bahia
