This is the latest chapter in the long-standing Clássico Alvinegro between Corinthians and Santos. The last time these two sides met was during the Campeonato Paulista semifinals earlier this year. On that occasion, Corinthians secured a 2-1 victory, a crucial win that helped propel them toward eventually lifting the trophy.

Corinthians
Corinthians have had a fairly mixed week, to say the least. First, they took on Mirassol in the league and suffered a 2-1 defeat. Cacá opened the scoring for Corinthians, giving them a 1-0 lead at half-time. However, Edson Carioca and Gabriel turned things around in the second half to hand Mirassol the win.

The result leaves Corinthians sitting 10th in the league after eight matches.

In midweek, they responded positively with a 1-0 win over Uruguayan side Racing Montevideo in the Copa Sudamericana, thanks to a second-half goal from Matheus Bidu. Corinthians currently sit second in their group and head into the final matchday looking to secure a place in the knockout stages.

For now, though, the focus is back on domestic competition as they look to climb further up the Brasileirão table.

Santos
Santos have had a dreadful start to the league campaign, currently sitting in 19th place, four points adrift of the survival spots. While it’s still early days, their record of one win, two draws, and five defeats from eight matches is worrying, especially considering they haven’t had the distraction of continental competition like many of their rivals.

Last time out, Santos hosted Ceará and were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw at home. They managed just one shot on target across the 90 minutes, a stat that reflects their ongoing struggles in front of goal.

Santos will be desperate to show improvement in this outing as they look to kick-start their season and climb out of the bottom two.

Prediction – Corinthians 2-0 Santos
