Internacional
It’s been a disappointing week for Internacional, who are now winless in their last two league matches. Most recently, they suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Botafogo in what can only be described as a formal battering. Goals from Igor Jesus, Artur, Cuiabano and Alex Telles sealed a dominant 4-0 win for the hosts.
Despite offering more xG, Internacional were thoroughly outplayed, a reminder that expected goals don’t always tell the full story. It was a poor showing defensively and a performance they’ll want to quickly move past.
In midweek, however, it was a much-improved display. Ricardo Mathias and Braian Aguirre scored in a 2-0 win away to Nacional in the Copa Libertadores — a vital result that keeps their continental hopes alive.
Now, Internacional know that a win at home against fellow Brazilian side Bahia in a couple of weeks will secure their place in the next stage of the tournament. Until then, their focus shifts back to domestic matters.
Mirassol
Mirassol currently sit in 12th place in their debut season in the Brasileirão. Last time out, they ended a three-match winless run with an impressive 2-1 victory over Corinthians. Cacá opened the scoring for Corinthians in first-half stoppage time, but Edson Carioca and Gabriel replied in the second half to secure all three points for the hosts.
In truth, Mirassol executed their game plan to perfection — sitting deep, absorbing pressure, and hitting on the counter. Despite having less of the ball, they created the better chances, registering 14 shots to Corinthians’ 10 and showing sharpness in transition.
Unlike Internacional, Mirassol haven’t had any midweek distractions, meaning they come into this clash the fresher of the two sides — an edge they’ll be hoping to use to their advantage in this duel.
Prediction – Internacional 2-1 Mirassol
