Flamengo take on Bayern Munich at the Miami Hard Rock Stadium in what will be an intriguing clash between two great sides. The pair have never met before, and this will be Flamengo’s first-ever match against German opposition. As for Bayern, they’ve only faced Brazilian opposition twice — both times against Cruzeiro in the 1976 Intercontinental Cup. Flamengo come into this one having topped Group D with some impressive performances and are currently unbeaten in their last 11 matches in all competitions, a run they’ll be desperate to extend here.

The Rubro Negro opened their campaign with a solid 2-0 victory over Esperance Tunis of Tunisia to get things underway. Then in Matchweek two, it got even better as they beat Chelsea in a historic 3-1 win. After going a goal behind, it was all about the second half as goals from Bruno Henrique, Danilo, and Wallace Yan turned the game on its head. Not only did they beat Chelsea, they outplayed them, a top display from the Brazilian side and a tactical masterclass from their young manager, Filipe Luís. Their final group match saw them draw 1-1 with Los Angeles, a game where Flamengo rested many of their key starters with one eye on the knockouts.

Bruno Henrique has been a game-changer for Flamengo, especially in the game against Chelsea, where he came off the bench to provide a goal and an assist. Another standout has been youngster Wallace Yan, who has scored twice in just 29 minutes of football. One key asset has also been new signing Jorginho, who in his three matches has provided two assists, already becoming a fan favourite at Rubro-Negro.

Flamengo’s reward for topping the group? A huge tie against the German champions, Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich started off their Club World Cup campaign in ruthless fashion with a 10-0 victory over amateur side Auckland City. They were 6-0 up by half-time and added four more after the break in a total demolition. Their second match saw them beat South American giants Boca Juniors 2-1, with goals from Harry Kane and Michael Olise. However, their final group match didn’t go to plan as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Benfica. Still, it was enough to see them go through in second place, setting up this clash with Flamengo. Vincent Kompany will be desperate to avoid what happened to Chelsea and will be hoping for a much better performance here.

The winner of this tie will take on either Inter Miami or European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the next round.
