Fluminense

This will be Fluminense’s first match since their Club World Cup campaign, where they enjoyed a solid run to the semi-finals, performing better than any other Brazilian side in the competition. Their tournament ended with a 2-0 defeat to eventual winners Chelsea in the semi-final, leaving them empty-handed.

Despite that, they’ll be pleased with their performances overall, having beaten Champions League finalists Inter Milan and overcoming Al-Hilal in the quarter-finals. Now, their focus returns to the Brasileirão, where they’ve played 11 matches, winning six, drawing two, and losing three.

Fluminense currently sit in 7th place and know a victory here pushes them up the table — potentially as high as 5th, as they look to carry their Club World Cup form back into domestic action.

Prior to the break for the Club World Cup, Fluminense picked up a solid 2-0 away victory over Internacional in their last league outing.

Their defeat to Chelsea in the Club World Cup semi-final was their first loss in 11 matches, and they’ll be hoping to bounce back at the first time of asking as they return to domestic action.

Cruzeiro
It felt like there had never been a break in the Brasileirão as Cruzeiro picked up right where they left off at the weekend. They are now unbeaten in their last 13 domestic matches and, at the weekend, enjoyed a thumping 4-1 win over Grêmio at home.

Kaio Jorge opened the scoring before Lucas Villalba doubled the lead before half-time. The second half saw Jorge add a third to complete his hat-trick and seal a dominant 4-1 victory in what was a comprehensive performance.

Cruzeiro know that if they win here, they’ll leap above Flamengo into first place after the Rubro-Negro slipped to a defeat against Santos on Wednesday night.

Prediction – Fluminense 1-1 Cruzeiro
